Elderberry Honey Cough Drop Recipe

60

If you already make elderberry syrup, this is a great next recipe to try. Elderberry honey cough drops are simple, soothing, and easy to keep on hand during cold weather. They combine the rich berry flavor of elderberry with honey, lemon, and ginger for a comforting homemade option.

This version is a soft herbal candy-style drop (not a hard commercial lozenge), so it’s best stored in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup elderberry syrup (well strained)
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp finely grated fresh ginger (optional)
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for thickening and dusting)
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch (optional, for easier shaping)

Instructions

1) Warm the base

In a small saucepan, combine the elderberry syrup, honey, lemon juice, and ginger (if using). Warm over low heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring gently. Do not boil hard—just heat enough to blend the ingredients and slightly reduce the mixture.

2) Strain (if needed)

If you used fresh ginger, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl to remove pulp. Let it cool for a few minutes until warm but not hot.

3) Thicken into a dough

Add 1 cup powdered sugar gradually, stirring constantly. Keep adding a little more until the mixture becomes thick enough to handle. If it still feels sticky, mix in arrowroot powder or cornstarch.

4) Shape the drops

Dust a clean surface or plate with powdered sugar. Scoop small portions (about pea-sized) and roll them into little balls or press into small discs. Coat each one lightly in powdered sugar so they do not stick together.

5) Chill

Place the drops on a parchment-lined plate or tray and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes to firm up.

How to Store

Keep the cough drops in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 weeks. Layer with a little powdered sugar between them if needed.

Tips

Use a thick elderberry syrup for best results. If your syrup is very thin, simmer it a little longer before starting.
For a warmer flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon.
For a smoother texture, skip fresh ginger and use a tiny pinch of ground ginger.

Important note

These are a homemade comfort recipe, not a medical treatment. Also, because this recipe contains honey, it should not be given to children under 1 year old.
