These herbs and spices for elderberry have been specially selected for their properties or to add to the taste appeal of anything elderberry. Make your elderberry syrup suits your taste by adding any of these time tested herbs, or use these herbs to formulate your own elderberry herbal teas. Use all herbs sparingly ~think 1/2 teaspoon per pint of syrup, then adjust to taste. Check with your doctor before using any herbs as medical or health treatment. Ginger - Ginger is a spice that is often added to many elderberry recipes. It has a slightly sweet, spicy, warm and almost peppery taste with citrus undertones. Ginger is often used among herbalist for it's many benefits. 20 grams (This one is China Grown until I can find another supplier) Kids don't normally appreciate the spiciness of ginger so you may want to go extra light with this one if you are making elderberry syrup for them. Echinacea - E. purpurea (USA grown) is cooling, spicy, and a bit acrid-tasting, if taste were a color this would be light green. Very slight floral taste. 10 grams. Best by March 2025
Lemon Peel Cut and Sifted - Adding the tartness of lemon to elderberry kicks the tartness in a slightly different and more pleasing direction. This dried lemon (USA grown) is handy to have when you don't have access to fresh. Best by August 2025
Licorice - Glycyrrhiza species. Besides it's benefits, licorice (Eastern Europe and Asia grown) adds a sweetness to elderberry. It is said to deliver 30-50 times more sweetness than pure sugar. You would have to add an awful lot to get the taste of licorice candy so no worries if you don't like licorice candy your syrup won't taste like licorice, you will just notice the extra sweetness. Rose hips Seedless, cut and sifted, and organic. Rose hips have a faint floral, slightly sweet flavor with a touch of tartness. Extremely high in vitamin C. Best by January 2025
